Heritage Square is an historic area in Downtown Oxnard, home to many boutique retail shops. We took our video cameras into La Dolce Vita, an authentic Italian restaurant that has been serving up classic Italian dishes for a long, long time. Owner, Michelle Kenney, comes from family with well-established roots in the restaurant business, and she had her Head Chef, Anita Lafferty, cook us one of their signature, to-die-for dishes, their fantastic Stuffed Portabella Mushroom.

La Dolce Vita's famous stuffed portabella mushroom dish (Oxnard, CA).

While talking to Anita in the kitchen, the smell was mouth-watering unto itself. The sauteed shallots and garlic was enough to make us beyond hungry, then came everything else that got stuffed into the mushroom. We were even made privy to their classic "Mama's Spice," a traditional blend of spices carried from generation to generation.

When you think of Italian dishes, you think of those classic Italian blends of herbs, rustic flavors and a heartiness in the food where you know you won't be left hungry. However, when you see the title "Stuffed Portabella Mushroom," you don't automatically think, "Man, this is gonna fill me up." However, it did, as we show in the video. Just a few bites into it and we knew this would be a hearty, stick-to-your-ribs (in a good way) kind of meal. Not to say it was heavy at all - just hearty.
