Oxnard Restaurants: Hidden Among California's Best-Kept, Secret Beach Community
If you're looking for seaside dining in a coastal town that isn't crawling with tourists, Oxnard is, perhaps, the best destination for foodies who are searching for great, independent restaurants where the locals eat.
Just south of Ventura, CA, is Oxnard. Thanks to Ventura being a little more well-known than Oxnard, Ventura tends to be more of a top-of-mind foodie destination than Oxnard, but don't let that stop you from checking out Oxnard's great restaurants, too. Oxnard has a long stretch of luxury homes right on the beach, and the Oxnard Harbor is home to tons of great, independent restaurants. In fact, there's not a chain restaurant in sight in Oxnard's Harbor area that we can think of. Oxnard's coastal restaurants in the harbor offer great seafood, awesome comfort food, authentic Italian cuisine, some classic American cuisine, and a stellar, authentic Brazilian restaurant. Just about all these restaurants overlook the boats in the harbor, including a couple of friendly-neighborhood bars and night-life spots. From our experience, you really can't go wrong with any of the restaurants in Oxnard's Harbor. Oxnard also has a great downtown district that features a good mix of middle- to high-end cuisine, authentic Mexican food, steak houses, and even a restaurant that serves delicious food created by a nutritionist! Local Saute went to visit Oxnard's downtown district, and we brought some video cameras and microphones with us. We hung out with Magda Weydt (the Nutritionist mentioned above), the owner of Fresh and Fabulous where she showed us how she makes her special, homemade quiche, as well as her famous Cranberry Pecan Chicken Salad. You can see the Fresh and Fabulous videos here. Once we were nice and full from the Fresh and Fabulous quiche, salad and sandwich, naturally, we went and ate some more! We went to Sugarbeets, a high-end (but not crazy-priced) restaurant right in the heart of downtown Oxnard. Executive Chef, Martin Ledesma, made us a locally-caught, pan-roasted sea bass with pea tendrils, butternut squash puree and a passionfruit essence sauce that was un-beeeee-lieeeeeevable. We also went to a Downtown Oxnard fixture in Heritage Square called La Dolce Vita. La Dolce Vita is known for being one of the best Italian restaurants in Ventura County. Head Chef, Anita Lafferty, showed us a great time while teaching us how to make the world's greatest stuffed portabella mushroom. Check out the video with La Dolce Vita here.
