Ventura is one of California's best kept secrets. Full of great, independent restaurants, beach-goers and laid back people, Ventura is one of the coolest places you can visit for great food and small crowds.

While everyone else is doing the tourist thing in Los Angeles, you can venture about an hour-and-a-half north and escape to a quieter beach community that has a lot to offer for great food, great restaurants and awesome night-life.

In fact, just heading west on Seaward Ave. off of the 101 freeway will land you in a little spot by the beach with a handful of great restaurants, all on the same block. Italian food, Mexican food, an independent cafe (yeah - those still exist!), some great fish and chips and a classic American Grill.

As is common to the restaurants in the area, most of the restaurants in Ventura take advantage of the local produce from the region, as well as local wines and other fresh ingredients.

If you end up a little further inland in Ventura, you'll find a lot more restaurants of all types: high-end dining, holes in the wall, laid-back foodie food; Mexican, Italian, Sushi and Seafood, Steakhouses and so on. California cuisine and Ventura's climate go especially well together and there are endless opportunities for you to stumble upon great restaurants everywhere you go, from the Ventura Harbor to the beach and everywhere in between. When you're done eating, there's plenty of night-life to keep you burning off your food til last call.
